Baby showers are the lead-up to the big event, the time to celebrate the new arrival before the hard work of caring for the actually arrives. For expectant mothers, they can also be a "last hurrah" of sorts, a time to spend with friends and family members before the all-consuming responsibilities rob them of much of their free time. It's tough to hit the right pitch of joy and anticipation when throwing a shower, so it's no wonder so many expectant mothers, family members, and godparents approach them with a sense of trepidation.
So for throwing the shower, keep a few ideas in mind:

- Gifts don't have to be elaborate, and they don't have to be cheesy. There's an old saying that it's the thought that counts, but that's not entirely accurate. Giving a baby-specific gift is a nice thought, but the truly thoughtful gift is one that can be appreciated long after the has grown into childhood and beyond. Personalized gifts are a nifty way to create an instant keepsake, as they make any gift unique to the mother and child alike. There are any number of techniques, including engraving, monogramming, and inscription, that create the extra personal touch. Many gifts feature such added touches at little or no extra cost. They make good conversation fodder at the shower itself, too.
